Strength Through Joy

Strength Through Joy was founded in Australia in 1991 by bassist Timothy Jenn and vocalist Richard Leviathan. Although Jenn had his roots in the gothic musical milieu of Ireland and Leviathan was a bullet-belt wearing black metal fan, the two men seemed to have a lot in common and soon struck up a friendship. Although Leviathan himself had no prior musical experience before meeting Jenn, he wrote some great lyrics and had a distinctive if not good singing voice. After cutting a short demo of dark folk material, the boys in the band wrote to Death in June leader Douglas Pearce to ask his permission to send a demo to him. Pearce responded affirmatively and then pointed out that he actually lived only a little more than 10 kilometers down the road from them.

Upon their meeting, Pearce agreed to produce Strength Through Joy’s first album as he found himself genuinely impressed with the band’s “originality.” I’m not sure if that was originality he was hearing or if was hearing what Death In June had sounded like ten years earlier; even Leviathan admits “his (Pearce’s) influence on the…style of music is obvious.”* Either way, in 1994, Strength Through Joy released a single on vinyl called Dark Rose that featured three songs. Of note is the opener A Grave For Burning Wings on which Douglas Pearce actually sings and plays acoustic guitar, the style of the song presaging Death In June’s 1996 album Rose Clouds Of Holocaust. Later that same year, Pearce produced Strength Through Joy’s true first full-length album, the Force Of Truth And Lies (the title having been taken from a passage in Plato’s famous dialoge the Apology of Socrates).

If you’re adamant that Lakes isn’t really your thing, here’s a challenge: play Solar Flecks really loud in your lounge room and move two or three rooms away, making sure to close all the doors behind you. Listen to what wafts down the hall or through the walls and you’ll notice that the hostile textures have dissipated, leaving behind songs that are sometimes oblique (‘Misting’), and sometimes almost inane in their catchiness (‘Dragon Current’). Repeat this a few times, and then play it again on headphones. Really loud. If you don’t love it now, with the hooks already embedded in your mind, you never will.

There are only a few factors separating this music from folk. The eastern scales are back, bringing all the improvised (but invariably resolving) melodic arcs back into focus, confusing the foundations of songs that are often only traceable by a lone, droning tom drum. Sean Bailey’s vocals are locked in a mode of despair; he clutches to vowels in a faintly harassing manner, with force and urgency negating any affectation. And those drums, which pulse within each of these songs, are taut and unrelenting; stubbornly keeping the beat and adorned only occasionally with shakers. When you can get a grasp on the lyrics they’re impressionistic: words offer themselves as clues, illustrative and helpful milestones that elucidate the esoteric world Bailey can conjure through music alone anyway.

In light of Bailey’s other project Wasted Truth – a comparatively straightforward punk affair – Lakes begins to sound like a mode of song that could fit almost any outfit, but is instead delivered in this minimalist/maximalist fashion: minimal fuss, maximum sound. Opener ‘Energy Garden’ hints at a departure from his previous LP Cloven. The tom drum is processed to the point where it might be programmed (is it?), and sparks of crude noise feed a shroud of calm organ drone, bringing to mind a kind of inverted Fantasia, all choreographed smoke plumes and metronomicly precise conveyor belts. It’s mechanically exact and subject to wear. In worst case scenarios it could ignite a factory fire.

But from then on it’s Bailey, his guitar, and some drums in full attack mode. Rarely is there room to breathe or take stock. Lakes’ music feels like some heaving mass of placenta that you need to tear apart and get within – an initially horrendous but eventually normalising womb of sound. Once you’ve managed to get in – to penetrate the untoward elements – songs such as ‘Solar Flecks’ and ‘Dragon Current’ are easily cherishable. Though I don’t count on many having the patience to get that far. Do give it a go, though, because even when it lags, Solar Flecks is as transportive as ever.

LAKES. sean bailey has a rich history as a band-whore: GEORGE W. BUSH, VIVIAN GIRLS (late 90's - the real shit), ST. ALBANS KIDS, WASTED TRUTH, MINDSNARE (?!) etc. etc. as LAKES, bailey first channelled THE FALL and SLUGFUCKERS into his own version of synth-pop, relying on casio beats and keys to provide the background to his semi-monotone vocal expression(s). i was hooked immediately on his debut 7" and LP - raucous and catchy, he played songs that were infectious and ingeniously melodic while also at times, simultanaeously ugly and angry. his cover art also played an important role, and i found myself obsessively collecting every release on his own INVERTED CRUX label - even when i had little time for some of the music, recorded mostly to cassettes with gorgeous screen-printed covers that brought, at least to my ill-informed mind, an autistic MIRO...lines upon lines, seemingly scratched into some sort of made-up language that only he understood, but resonated with me deeply. as his releases multiplied in number, i purchased them all, and have been lucky enough to share jams and shows with him - but my interest waned slightly i must admit - we are around the same age and have inhaled a lot of the same music over the years, and i found it difficult to get past the fact that his later material recalled all-too-well his influences - namely, GARETH WILLIAMS/THIS HEAT and THE SHADOW RING. his mastery of percussion and recording though, always impressed me immeasurably, and i continued to collect everything he produced, hoping that it was just me being a picky bastard (no, you think - you're just an arsehole). thirty minutes ago, our friend wearing fluro delivered five copies of sean's new LP, 'solar flecks', and as it blasts tape distorted tunes with an eastern-tinged edge, probably shitting our neighbours upstairs again (at least it isn't TOECUTTER this time, cunt), i am convinced finally that LAKES isn't going anywhere anytime soon and that i have warmed to it completely. sean has been hinting toward this/these sound(s) for quite awhile - his 'monument of nests' tape being the most effective, but 'solar flecks' is one step further again...a subtle step, but an important one. said LP is completely immersive for a start - stark and thick as molasses, not unlike MOUTHUS in regards to production - using recording tape as an instrument instead of simply a tool to document sound. all of the previous elements he has utilised recently are here: keyboard, acoustic and electric guitar(distorted with gain), assorted percussion, tapes etc., but there is some missing ingredient added - sean speeds up and slows down the tempo frequently, adding an intensity and a palpable menace to these tunes that are already an uneasy but completely rewarding listen. the guitar tones are a lot more varied and his vocals, ever so slightly more pronounced. LAKES as a live experience is always fucking LOUD and true - his songs take on more guts, as if proclaimed from deep within a black hole...though one you want to dive into instead of avoid. 'solar flecks' is a fantastic LP, another one for my collection and a record that you should snap up if given the oppotunity. 100 copies, screen-printed cover and an insert printed on tracing paper. perfect.

These two records could not be further apart in sound/worlds but who cares both of these records are awesome examples of the spirit of the Australian underground. MOUTH were a Hobart punk band circa 1992, the only comparison I have is SLIP IT IN era BLACK FLAG, and even that’s a long shot, they were an entity of their own, and its awesome!! I saw them a lot as a teenager and they were an amazing live band. They released this cassette, a split cassette with Melbourne group NECKLACE OF TEETH (I owned this tape but I cant find it find it!! If anyone has it, please let me know), a CD called ‘Victim Chant’, a live recording from the GB in Melbourne, and a film clip is floating around somewhere in someone’s damp Tasmanian shed. Tim went on to form Sea Scouts and then Bird Blobs, he now lives in NY and plays in DeGreaser, Bogan Dust and is singing for Venom P Stinger! MOUTH

Forepaw was a Melbourne artist run project space in Northcote that hosted sooo many amazing events, and at one point held everything together when there was no where else to play. Eventually the rents when up in Northcote and the landlords became greedy scum and along with Joint Hassles, Forepaw was closed down last year. I stumbled across this live set of Lakes at Forepaw from a blog called sky hut, an amazing bootleg site of Australian bands. Get it here, thanks to Sky Hut for being amazing.
